August 2016 - News Nuggets

What a summer! The action has been non-stop between a mission trip, Mud Hens game and our weekly Friday nights at the Weaver Ranch.

Three of our Active Christians Today University of Toledo students and the Weaver family joined with 25 youth and adults from Northwest Ohio to spend a week on mission in West Virginia. The group participated in the Brothers’ Keeper ministry based at Parchment Valley in Ripley. The ministry reaches out to the Jackson County West Virginia area (one of the poorest in all of West Virginia) by building wheelchair ramps, decks, house repairs, tarring roofs and more. Our students helped in leadership during the week along with serving on work teams around the county. Check out actoday.org for a video report of the week in West Virginia.

“In the Woods with Jesus” has been such a blessing. This summer we have spent every Friday night out at the Weaver Ranch enjoying campfires, volleyball, nine square, swimming, fellowship and country living. It has been a great opportunity to welcome the Williams family to Northwest Ohio. We have been blessed to see ACT Inc Board members, leaders, alumni and of course students from both UT and BG. Everyone is invited to join us (families are always welcome!) at the "Weaver Ranch" (6260 Prov Neap Swan Rd Swanton OH 43558) for s'mores, hot dogs, pudgie pies, popcorn, campfires, volleyball, games, swimming (in a small pool), music and more! All are welcome beginning at 6:30 PM and ending whenever. See actoday.org or ut.actoday.org for dates.

ACT gathered a big group to attend a Toledo Mud Hens game in July. It was a fun evening filled with laughter, fellowship and baseball!!!

“Rocket Launch” at the University of Toledo continued through July. This is a mandatory orientation program for new students at the University of Toledo. Throughout the summer our ACT UT students will have a table set up where they have been available to introduce themselves, answer questions about ACT UT and invite students to join us for our Friday cookouts and coming Fall events.

Your prayers and support make all the difference in what we do! Thank you and stop in and see us... our doors are always open!

We remain active and busy this summer!

We welcomed our new ACT BG campus pastor Don Williams and his family in June. A great group greeted the family and helped them unload their belongings from Colorado and get settled in as they prepare for ministry at Bowling Green State University. Already plans are in the works for more interaction between the campuses.

Three of our ACT UT students, the Weaver family and the W2Crew Student Ministry group from Northwest Ohio have just completed a week in West Virginia with the Brothers’ Keeper ministry based at Parchment Valley in Ripley. The ministry reaches out to the Jackson County West Virginia area (one of the poorest in all of West Virginia) by building wheelchair ramps, decks, house repairs, tarring roofs and more. Our students helped in leadership during the week along with serving on work teams around the county.

Our “In the Woods with Jesus” Friday nights continue right up until the Fall Semester begins for our students. We have been blessed with a different group of students and leaders each Friday night. We have had ACT Inc Board members, leaders, alumni and of course students from both UT and BG. Everyone is invited to join us (families are always welcome!) at the "Weaver Ranch" (6260 Prov Neap Swan Rd Swanton OH 43558) for s'mores, hot dogs, pudgie pies, popcorn, campfires, volleyball, games, ping pong, croquet, lazy hammocking (new word), swimming (in a small pool), music and more! All are welcome beginning at 6:30 PM and ending whenever.

June 2016 - News Nuggets

You might expect that our university student ministry would slow down or even shut down during the summer months. That is far from the case!

This summer we bring together our ACT BG and ACT UT groups for "In the Woods with Jesus" almost every Friday night. Everyone is invited to join us (alumni and families are always welcome!) at the "Weaver Ranch" (6260 Prov Neap Swan Rd Swanton OH 43558) for s'mores, hot dogs, pudgie pies, popcorn, campfires, volleyball, games, ping pong, croquet, lazy hammocking (new word), swimming (in a small pool), music and more! Each week one of our students will lead us in a devotional to keep our week in focus. All are welcome beginning at 6:30 PM and ending whenever. Please check our calendar for dates.

ACT UT continues to lead in worship at That Neighborhood Church as we have done monthly. We plan to continue through the summer.

“Brothers’ Keeper” is a long-running mission ministry based at Parchment Valley in Ripley, West Virginia. Several of our ACT UT students will take time out of their summer schedule the last week in June to help disadvantaged families with basic construction and repair work in their homes. This includes building wheelchair ramps, porch construction, painting, drywall repair and more.

God has blessed the ACT UT group in so many ways. We thank you so much for your support as we have the blessing of working in the campus community.

May 2016 - News Nuggets

As we wrap things up for the Spring Semester we praise God for the many blessings He has showered on us (April showers of blessings!).

Our weekly Sunday worship services concluded with a special night led by the students. Music selections, testimonies and a lot of laughter defined our final service. We also had the opportunity to join with our brothers and sisters at ACT BG for Dave and Vicki Warner’s final worship service at Prout Chapel. About twenty University of Toledo students and leaders made their way to Bowling Green State University for what proved to be a powerful and moving night.

One of the great joys of the month was the “Chivalry Dinner” where our guys prepared, hosted and served a sit down banquet dinner for our ACT ladies. A fun time was had by all!

ACT UT also led in worship at That Neighborhood Church as we have done monthly. We plan to continue through the summer.

The weekly UT “Prayer Walk” around the University of Toledo Campus continues. Students pray specifically for the campus, the students, the professors and leaders. Every Friday morning the group leaves the student union and truly turns their hearts to God.

Students from ACT UT traveled to Bowling Green to join in on the bi-annual Food Giveaway. The following two days we spent giving away doughnuts as a part of our ACT UT Exam Doughnut Giveaway. Both were opportunities to begin conversations and serve others. We may never know what seeds were planted at these events!

The final ACT UT big event of the month was our Koinonia Dinner. On this night we invited ACT Alumni to join in as we shared how God had blessed us through ACT this past school year. Included in the evening was the revealing of the total dollars raised through a special fund raiser to help KyWann Whiting’s family after KyWann’s accident at the SkyZone Trampoline Park in January. The Student Leadership Team expected to raise around $300 but our actual total was over $650. God has blessed so much!

This summer will feature a combined ACT UT and BG event called “In the Woods with Jesus.” Each Friday we will enjoy a student-led devotional around a campfire along with fellowship, games and fun. We are looking forward to this as a way to build community heading into the Fall semester.

God has blessed the ACT UT group in so many ways. We thank you so much for your support as we have the blessing of working in the campus community.

April 2016 - News Nuggets

What a month! It all began with a trip to Dayton for the Dare2Share Student Evangelism Conference. We presented a sketch as part of a late night after party. This was followed immediately by Spring Break.

Students from ACT UT joined students from ACT BG for a spring break mission trip to some of the poorest areas in and around West Palm Beach, Florida. The group worked with elementary aged children in an after school program, served over 250 in a soup kitchen, cleaned out a warehouse for fund raising, participated in a Farm Share program serving over 500 people and worked with the Salvation Army in a mobile meals program.

Three other students traveled to Tampa, Florida where they worked with a family with five children and gave the parents some much needed time off.

Our students have established a weekly “Prayer Walk” around the University of Toledo Campus where they pray specifically for the campus, the students, the professors and leaders. Every Friday morning the group leaves the student union and truly turns their hearts to God.

Prayer has been the focus over the last month during our worship each Sunday night. We have looked at different aspects of prayer, models of prayer and shared in the praises of KyWann Whiting’s recovery after a nasty accident at the SkyZone trampoline park in January. KyWann’s recovery has been nothing but a miracle and we know it is the result of prayers from so many!

Our Wednesday night Bible Study has continued on the book of James. Our study will conclude in April.

March 2016 - News Nuggets

For a short month we had a lot going on in February. We held a months have included a "Football Sunday" Super Bowl party featuring testimonies from many of the players in the game. Our worship has turned to the Lenten season with a focus on prayer. We have served That Neighborhood Church leading worship on two Saturdays in January and February. Our First Family Film Festival included the movie "Woodlawn" and “I’m In Love with a Church Girl.”

In addition to the many other events over the last month, it was also exciting to gather with our counterparts from Ohio State University, Ohio University and ACT BG for the annual Winter Retreat at Lake James in Indiana. It was a special time of spiritual enrichment, worship and an opportunity to get to know the incoming ACT BG Campus Director Donivan Williams. Our students only had wonderful things to say about an amazing weekend!

Our Wednesday night Bible Study continues as we dive deep into the book of James. This study will continue through March.

We worshiped with That Neighborhood Church as we do each month providing “live music” for the Saturday night worship times in downtown Toledo.

We thank God everyday for the blessing of working in the campus community. We have seen God move already and can’t wait to see where He takes us next!

February 2016 - News Nuggets

The new semester has kicked off with a full house of students ready to grow, study and celebrate together in community life.

Our Wednesday night Bible Study is diving in to the book of James for the next few months. This is a truly in-depth study. In our first three weeks we have only covered the first chapter! The words of James really show us what it means to actively live out a life committed to God. There is a big difference between just talking and actually walking!

Sunday night is truly a wonderful time to worship together. The ACT UT living room is filled with students praising God. We gather at the Lord’s Table at least once a month. In the midst of praising God, we have also learned what it means to play “Hide N Seek” with God (even though God isn’t playing with us).

We again worshiped with That Neighborhood Church. We continue to lead worship on a monthly basis and provide “live music” for the Saturday night worship times in downtown Toledo.

Our weekly social events will include our family film night featuring family movies from independent Christian film makers. We have viewed the movie “War Room” and in February “Woodlawn” is on the schedule.

Upcoming events include presenting a dinner theater production titled “Lost in Serenity” to raise money for our summer mission work. Casting and rehearsals begin in the coming weeks!

January 2016 - News Nuggets

The new semester opens with so many opportunities to grow and see where God takes us. With God’s help this past semester we were able to implement ACT’s mission goals of evangelism, discipleship, leadership training, developing a global Christian view and maintaining a community social life through our weekly activities and special events.

This winter and spring we are looking forward to expand those opportunities. Our Sunday night worship grew into a truly organic time of joy and praise. We will continue to develop our time of worship specifically focused on student involvement in all aspects of what we do. Through experiential worship, drama, prayer and music we are excited to see what God will do this semester.

Our Wednesday night family meal and Bible Study will turn to a study of the book of James. The brother of Jesus has so much to say about the “activity of faith” and what it means to be a Christian in the community of Believers. The instruction James provides will be a great building block for our students in building relationships and spiritual growth through accountability with others.

We are excited to continue our work with That Neighborhood Church. We will lead worship on a monthly basis through the spring providing “live music” for the Saturday night worship times in downtown Toledo.

Our weekly social events will include our family film night featuring family movies from independent Christian film makers. Games nights, a special winter “indoor snowball fight night” (with fake snowballs of course), trivia night sand more are scheduled for the new year. We are also hoping to add in some local Christian concerts and events to our schedule.

God is moving and doing a wonderful work among our students. We ask your for your prayers as we continue to discern where God is leading and the best way to reach our campus for Christ!
